Eggs

Eggs are typically very easy for the body to digest.  If you suddenly develop an allergy or sensitivity to eggs, it could possibly be the antibiotics or pesticides used on or around the hens.  Try eating organic, cage free eggs because there is less chance of inflammation.  Also, some people are only allergic to the whites, and some people are only allergic to the yolks.  There are substitutions  (like applesauce!) for eggs that can be used in recipes.  Try this site, but don’t use vegetable oil as it suggests.  Instead of vegetable oil, use coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil.

Dairy

Most people who are lactose intolerant are not necessarily allergic to milk.  The enzymes we need to help digest dairy products are removed during the pasteurization.  Whole, raw milk is sometimes the answer.  Cream is mostly fat and less likely to cause allergies.   If not, here are a few tips for substitution:

Cashew milk can be made at home in your blendtec.  It is really good in soup and sauces!  4 cups of water and 1 cup of cashews.  Soak for 1 hour and then blend.

Coconut milk is available in cartons at Costco (not in the fridge. it doesn’t have to be in the fridge until after you open the carton.) for a good price.  It is really good on hot oatmeal with honey.  Coconut milk is also good in baking. You can use the same amount of coconut milk anywhere milk is called for.  Here is a link to a recipe for a really good coconut milk smoothie recipe that you could make.  It will give you a great start to your day!

There are many choices of almond milk.  Be sure to read the labels.  Some have extra things you don’t want to drink.  Look for the unsweetened Almond milk in the dairy fridge.   Some people like to drink almond milk.  Almond milk is good to use in recipes wherever milk is called for.

Gluten

Wheat is fairly easy to substitute.  There are other types of flour that you can use that are less inflammatory.  When a recipe calls for flour, we usually make a mixture of flours to obtain the best results.

You can order pre mixed flour online.  A good kind is Gluten Free Mama’s almond blend and coconut blend.

You can mix your own blend using different gluten free flours.  If your recipe calls for 1 cup of flour, use one of these combinations:

  • ½ cup sorghum flour and ½ cup tapioca flour, 1.4 tsp. xanthan gum.
  • ¼ cup sorghum flour, ¼ cup almond flour, ¼ cup coconut flour, ¼ cup tapioca flour, 1/4 tsp. xanthan gum.
  • 1 cup buckwheat flour
  • 1/2 cup sorghum flour, 1/4 cup tapioca flour, 1/8 cup millet, and 1/8 cup coconut flour  or almond flour, 1/4 tsp xanthan gum.  This is probably the most preferred conbination.

Inflammation

Another thing that causes the body to develop allergies is inflammation.

There are things that you can do to decrease inflammation in your body:

  • Take krill oil 3-4 times a day.  It is the BEST inflammation fighter.  It naturally blocks the formation of the thing that makes inflammation.  The Kirkland brand of krill oil is better than most store brands.  We have one at the office that is amazing, but it also has an amazing price.
  • L-Arginine has nitric oxide, which reduces inflammation in the body.  We carry that as well (at a good price  )
  • Exercise creates endorphins that help to balance the immune system and help avoid auto-immune diseases.  One of the reasons allergies exist is the body over-reacting to a protein attached to the food.
  • Other research has shown how genetically engineered foods and the use of the agricultural herbicide glyphosate destroys gut bacteria, thereby promoting allergies. Here’s where probiotics come in.  You knew there was a germ or something you needed to be friends with.!   40 billion cells/day.  We have a good kind at the office.  Probiotics help to rebuild the gut bacteria.  The other thing that goes hand in hand with probiotics is Aloe (your favorite).  It helps heal the gut so the probiotic can do it’s job.
  • Drink hydrogen enriched water to decrease inflammation throughout the body and increase hydration. (we have the water generators in our office)
  • Drink one teaspoon of Himalayan Pink salt in a glass of water every morning.  Start using Himalayan pink salt in your baking and cooking instead of table salt.

Foods that increase inflammation in the body:

  • High fructose corn syrup and sugar.  You can use these sweeteners instead, when a recipe calls for sugar:
    • raw honey in an amount equal to the amount of sugar called for in the recipe, plus 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • maple syrup and raw honey, half and half, plus 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • for brown sugar substitutions, 1/4 of amount is black strap molasses
    • erythritol 1.25 x amount of sugar called for in recipe
    • a combination of erythritol, honey, maple syrup is good to keep recipe from acquiring the taste of the sweetener.
    • raw coconut sugar is measured equally to the amount of sugar called for in a recipe.
    • Stevia is 200 times stronger than sugar. It is great in cold things, but better mixed with another sweetener to get the front and back taste.
    • Xylitol has a flavor similar to sugar.
  • Vegetable oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, soy oil.  The oils that do not contribute to inflammation are
    • Olive oil, an omega 9 oil that does not contribute to inflammation.  Be sure to avoid buying the light olive oil.  Extra virgin olive oil is the best.  Pure olive oil can be used in baking when you don’t want the flavor of the recipe changed. It is excellent for dressings and dipping.  It can replace unhealthy oils in a recipe.
    • coconut oil, a medium chain triglyceride that gives your body and mind instant energy  It can replace any oil that is called for in a recipe.
    • avocado oil is excellent for higher heat cooking, and makes an amazing pot of popcorn.  (Be sure to use himHimalayan Pink salt)  Costco carries avocado oil.
    • ghee, or organic, grass fed butter (Costco carries Kerrygold Irish butter)
  • Soy products
  • Aspartame

 Other things that help your body overcome food sensitivities:

Heal the gut.  So many systems of the body rely on gut health because that’s where basic elements are made, including serotonin (which helps us feel joy and gives us a good night’s rest), and glutathione (which is used to convert toxins that enter our bodies)

Exercise helps your body create endorphins that you need to overcome auto-immune diseases and deal with inflammation.

Vitamin D3 , or lack thereof, is the underlying cause of many auto-immune diseases.
